Summer in Berlin will be different this year. Communities and gatherings are being reorganized during the pandemic. The outdoors is taking on new importance.
For six weekends from 16 July until 23 August, HKW invites the city to its rooftop terrace at dusk for the /20 Sunsets/ festival: with concert sets, films, readings, and talks by and with Berlin’s international artists and cultural professionals. Come together – outdoors and with a little distancing!
The concerts span the spectrum from singer-songwriters to avant-garde and ambient sounds to South American and Arabic music – all made in Berlin. Berlin’s extremely diverse music scene has always been the background for the music program at HKW – now is the right time to bring it to the fore. The “Mississippi”-themed Wassermusik originally planned for 2020 is postponed until 2021.
On six weekends, with /Arsenal 5 at HKW/, Kino Arsenal will present *film highlights* from its archives. The films take the audience to landscapes sacrificed to tourism, they dig up images from the earth and from archives, they observe animals and their critical gaze. They cross the desert and finally explore the interior of HKW. The films include the world premiere of Michael Busch’s /How Long is Now/, Thomas Heise’s /Heimat ist ein Raum aus Zeit /and Vaginal Davis’s film performance series /Contemporary Vinegar Syndrome/.
On six Thursdays, HKW invites guest to *gather around literary topics and writings*. In readings, performances, listening sessions, and roundtables, Berlin authors transmit the intimacy of reading to the social space, thus highlighting the dialogue aspect of contemporary literature.
