The St. John Passion (Passio) by Arvo Pärt from 1982/1989 is one of the pioneering works of the Estonian Composers. The Vocalconsort Berlin, one of the most versatile chamber choirs in Germany, performs the work in a special way in the St. Matthäus-kirche.
To take the architecture of the place scenically seriously means to to show passion in a kind of arena. Thus the audience finds itself in the midst of a sonic movement through the space. Pärt’s ascetic composition on the Latin text of the 18th and 19th chapters of the Gospel becomes a Way of the Cross.
