After a two year hiatus, the infamous clash of experimental music, installation, action art and other art forms will be taking place as AVANTGARDE IS HAPPENING again this year. Since its founding by Jean-Hervé Peron (faUSt) and Carina Varain in 1996, Avantgarde Festival has taken place in the little north-German village of Schiphorst over summer solstice and developed into something the drummer Chris Cutler (Henry Cow) has called “three days of utopia.”
This year’s edition was organised by three artists, all of whom have been involved with previous editions of the festival in one way or another. Their stated aim is to create a space for the Avantgarde to happen, to form creative networks. “It’s more about music as a form of organiation than as solely art, more about building bands than fighting alone, more of an underground club than a large museum. It’s a search for contemporary improvisatory formats and systems, with or in spite of the given resources.”
The three-day lineup includes VED, Sawada Harada Sasa, Asmus Tietchens, Jetzmann, Ernsthafte Angelegenheiten, faUST, Audiovisuelles Trio Aulbert Gloger Bethge, Dwarphs, Syrinx, Octopus Ride, dance performances, all kinds of happenings and much more.
