Bégayer and Kulku at 90mil / Tuesday, 25.2.2025

Bégayer is a quintet from the south-east of France. French songs, noises, rumors of distant and early musics, short and cruel poems, handcrafted instruments, Radio-amplifiers, circuit bending and other wasted electronic devices.

Bégayer’s mission– in the name of those without tradition, the rejects of a culture of scarcity born in the twilight of popular customs amidst the screams of Noise on village squares and in the flow of digital swarms– is to create a hitherto unknown genre of hybrid gypsy rhapsody.

The culture of scarcity can be experiences as a kind of cruel joy, an occasion to bridge the unsteady interpretation of ancient practices with contemporary experiments and build upon singular variations and excess. Up to now, every stutter-song intended to produce a joyful though disquieting object whose obstinacy and cruel simplicity triggered a disturbance, a distancing, a studied thing that stares right back at us.

Berlin natives Kulku bring something like the transportative, motoric energy of Can and combine it with the wonky palettes of DIY legends like Bow Gamelan Ensemble, Zev or even Tom Waits in his scrapyard era.

As a seven-member ensemble, they blend influences of early minimal music, ritual music, and 60s art rock. Kulku describes their music as No-Age, a fusion of raw punk energy and unadorned spirituality. Using unusual tools like metalophone & custom-built instruments, they create a universe of metaphysical stories about enlightened dogs and lost visionaries in the urban jungle of light and shadow.

In addition to these two groups, sensitive selector Suzana Benesova will play records to guide us through the inbetween moments. Expert spellcasters all three, the evening will surely be a rare and electricfying experience for anyone into music and performance at the visceral, timeless edge of things.
