A definite highlight of the Berlin summer and now regular fixture is the Berlin Atonal Festival at the Kraftwerk building next door to Tresor. This years immense programme includes, amongst many many more, none other than Death In Vegas, Rashad Becker + Moritz von Oswald, Mika Vainio, Roly Porter and Raime, to name but a few.
Berlin Atonal returns to its majestic permanent home at Kraftwerk Berlin for the fourth edition since its return in 2013. Projects from over 100 artists are being prepared for the 2016 iteration, including brand-new commissions, collaborations, world-premieres, one-off performances, installations and film art.
The cavernous Kraftwerk cathedral will open its doors to a host of figures operating in and around the world of experimental art and music, providing a setting for Atonal’s continuing project of providing a platform for innovation and experimentation encompassing all dimensions of creative expression. Alongside this, aftershows at Tresor, OHM and various other venues in the massive Kraftwerk complex will also provide a full programme of Atonal’s unique take on club music.
Projects from over 100 artists are being prepared for the 2016 edition, including brand-new commissions, collaborations, world-premieres, one-off performances, installations and film art, all representing and extending the robust and influential intervention Atonal has already made into the recent history of electronic and advanced art.
The very first release of names for Berlin Atonal 2016 includes a historical, world premiere Death in Vegas show. This specially conceived full audio-visual live performance unites psychedelic auteur Richard Fearless and artist and actress Sasha Grey over a love of Throbbing Gristle and Chris and Cosey. A long time in the making, this show – entitled Transmission – features all new experimental material, resonating across the soundscapes of visceral techno and unsettling, discordant drones, weaving a state of dreamlike euphoria.
Drew McDowall (Coil, Psychic TV) also performs brand new material as part of a specially created live A/V show in another world premiere, with a visual concept developed by Florence To, entitled Unnatural Channel. Imaginary Softwoods – the fabled and rarely heard kosmische/drone project from John Elliott, (Emeralds, Outer Space, label head of Spectrum Spools) – will play one of his uncommon live appearances. Roly Porter and Marcel Weber combine for a violently hallucinogenic total visual and sonic artwork – Third Law – based around material from Porter’s latest release on Tri-Angle – a German premiere.
Berlin Atonal 2016 will carry on last year’s addition of the raw and intense Stage Null to host shows in the Kraftwerk megacomplex after the performances on the iconic cathedral-like main stage, while adding a third room showcasing audio-visual projection art on a site-specific panoramic screen.
