‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’, ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’, ‘White Christmas’ … countless Hits and Evergreens of American composer Irving Berlin have made their way into the cultural memory of generations.
With the music festival ‘BERLIN in BERLIN’ his songs are now coming to Berlin. From 1st to 5th of March 2013 the music of Berlin will be presented live at hausungarn near Alexanderplatz, both in new interpretation and in classic jazz tradition.
Irving Berlin’s oeuvre is not only enigmatic for the history of the Broadway musical, popular and film music, but also for the musical identity of the United States. His popular stage composition »God Bless America« has become something like the inofficial anthem of the USA.

In 2001, after the terror attacks on the World Trade Center, members of Congress stepped out to sing Irving Berlin’s tune – a patriotic song, written originally to support US troops during the First World War. By presenting Berlin’s compositions in all their facets, the performance of the Cool Ensemble with their special guest, the British star vocalist Phil Minton, emphasizes both the music and its cultural/political significance.
In a five day long tour de force the ensemble showcases a selection of Irving Berlin’s most significant compositions – including works for radio, theater, and film – that have been arranged for quartet and singer.

The »greatest songwriter that has ever lived« (George Gershwin) and »one of the greatest lyric writers America has ever produced« (Ian Whitcomb) has left a legacy that generations of musical performers have dealt with and that has made Irving Berlin an American icon – providing the »average American« with a genuine »voice« of expression. To put it in Jerome Kern’s words: »Irving Berlin has no place in American music. He is American music.«
The ensemble: Phil Minton: voice | Sven-Åke Johansson: drums | Axel Dörner: trumpet | Jan Roder: double bass | Zoran Terzić: piano.
