A great concert at Supamolly this Leap Day with electronica pioneer Burnt Friedman & Iranian player tombak Mohammad Reza Mortazavi performing live together.
There is no such thing at too much Burnt Friedman. With the release of his Dead Saint Chronicles EP on Marionette earlier this year, the composer is back with a release on his own Nonplace label, this time collaborating with Tombak master Mohammad Reza Mortazavi. A transcendental rush from beginning to end, the four-tracker ‘Yek’ EP is an exuberant trip between polyrhythms and momentarily melodic flourishes, resulting in a euphoric listening experience that is familiar yet far-gone as well.
Touching on timeless percussive sounds and mixing it with precarious electronic bits, the release finds its apex with “Yek 132-11” – a track that starts off soothing but then barrels into something that’s cryptic and evocative at once. Never hindering its progression while inviting questions to surround it. Such is the mystery that Friedman employs with his music time and time again.
