Curated by the international acclaimed band Efterklang, the online radio station The Lake respectively, By The Lake features an inspired program focused on exploratory, experimental and interesting music of all ethnicities. Admired heroes, promising newcomers, and lauded artists pushing the envelope within their individual scenes. The festival is not focused on one genre or sub-culture, but believes in a pluralistic and open-minded music culture. The 2015 and 2016 the festival has presented names like: Omar Souleyman, King Khan & The Shrines, Liss, Liima, Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit, Master Musicians of Jajouka and many others.
Being involved in iconic bands like Neu! and Harmonia, Michael Rother sure is a key figure of the innovation of the German music scene from the early 1970s on. The composer and multi-instrumentalist is a long time favourite of the festival and we are very much looking forward to see him, Franz Bargmann and Hans Lampe perform NEU! and Harmonia songs live on stage.
It’s never easy to wear a crown, but Janka Nabay, the undisputed king of bubu, a frantically-paced dance music with ancient, magical origins in Sierra Leone, handles it with ease! Supported by the equally infamous Bubu Gang he creates a wild, high-octane juggernaut of call-and-response vocal interplay, juddering dancefloor rhythms, synths and guitars: Definitely a sight to see!
The Lake Radio has commissioned Peter Broderick to interpret song of his long time hero Arthur Russell in a new project with the logical name “Peter Broderick sings Arthur Russell”. There are many reasons for why Peter Broderick is perfect for this challenge. Just as the legendary New York figure Arthur Russell (1951-1992), Peter Broderick is an extremely gifted composer and multi-instrumentalist who fearlessly crosses genres, and always does so with ease and a genuine feeling of quality and innovation. Peter Broderick has prepared a killer setlist and will bring with him a band consisting of some of Copenhagen’s finest musicians.
Sasha Perera, or: Perera Elsewhere as she calls herself, is a fixed figure in many disparate music scenes. Trip-Hop is the name of this one, but the Berlin expat understands it in a broader sense: Hypnotic, moody and with a nod to the beat. For By the Lake she will present one of her rare solo shows, with her new record “All Of This”, to be released on Friends of Friends in June.
The festival will be held around the beautiful lake in Berlin-Weißensee, its goals being not only to showcase music, culture and art, but also the beauty and possibilities of the Weißensee district itself. Again, the program selection will be made by the online radio station The Lake, founded by Efterklang and friends, who will additionally set up a live radio studio during the festival to present interviews, dj sets and other extras in-between concerts.
Presented by Digital in Berlin.
