By the Lake, the festival for international and eclectic music taking place from 6th-7th of August in Berlin-Weißensee, is happy to announce the first five bands of its line-up as well as the locations of this year’s edition!
Joining this summer are: The Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar, Cavern of Anti-Matter, Laid Back, Liss and Selvhenter. Just like for the first edition of the festival, all artists have been selected and invited by The Lake (www.thelakeradio.com), the web radio station founded by Danish band Efterklang and friends.
With this, By the Lake unites a total of eight bands and concerts at two locations: Along with the Freilichtbühne Weißensee (August 6th) that has already been the home of the festival in 2015, on the second day (August 7th) the concerts will take place at the Strandbad Weißensee. Whether it’s dancing into the sunset or listening and relaxing on a sunlounger, the festival offers itself to become the best of beach parties. Bringing bathing attire is recommended!
The Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar: Keeping the ancient traditions of Moroccan sufi trance music very much alive, The Master Musicians of Jajouka are sure to set the body and mind free. Becoming known to a larger audience in the 60’s through their associations with Brian Jones as well as the beat scene, they have since played all over the world. We are grateful to be able to present this legendary ensemble.

Cavern of Anti-Matter: Summer started already in February this year, when Cavern of Anti-Matter released their brilliant and sun-drenched debut album Void Beats / Invocation Trex. The Berlin based band is led by Stereolab’s Tim Gane and also features synth wizard Holger Zapf as well as the original Stereolab drummer Joe Dilworth. Cosmic machine-led psychedelia in an analogue sci-fi pop heaven. Fittingly their album features contributions from Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3) & Jan St. Werner (Mouse On Mars).

Laid Back: People around the globe still light up with smiles and move their feet to the sound of Laid Back. They bring us together on dance floors across nations with a clear message: “slow down, relax and take it easy”. The album “Keep Smiling” from 1983 includes the single “Sunshine Reggae” that went to the top of the charts in 19 countries across Europe (incl. West Germany). In the U.S it was the b-side “White Horse” that became their breakthrough, partly thanks to the help of Prince, who urged Warner Bros. to release a 12-inch single featuring “White Horse” on one side and “When Doves Cry” on the other.
Liss: Watch out, here’s something fresh and incredibly pure. XL Recordings’ new signing Liss are an elegant spoonful of rare sunshine! The four friends Søren Holm (vocal), Villads Tyrrestrup (bass & vocal), Vilhelm Strange (guitar) and Tobias Laust (drums) from Aarhus, Denmark put out their debut ep (“Try/Always”) in December last year and dropped another one this spring named “Sorry”. These are delightful and instant tunes, produced with an open chest of brave honesty. Every day the choir of praising voices is growing, and we sing along. We love them to bits. Liss are something special, they’ll make your hips move sloooow and light up the dark side of your mind. The chances are you’ll be loving Liss long before they arrive in Berlin.
Selvhenter: Hailing from the Copenhagen underground, the all-female Danish quintet Selvhenter is a truly unique experience. An uncompromising, boundlessly energetic sound that blends the aesthetics of experimental rock, the sophistication of improvised free jazz and the aggressiveness of punk, noise and metal, all performed with passion and humor, sometimes even as music fit for dancing. Selvhenter are longtime favorites of The Lake and we can’t wait to present them.

The festival will be held around the beautiful lake in Berlin-Weißensee, its goals being not only to showcase music, culture and art, but also the beauty and possibilities of the Weißensee district itself. Again, the program selection will be made by the online radio station The Lake, founded by Efterklang and friends, who will additionally set up a live radio studio during the festival to present interviews, dj sets and other extras in-between concerts.
Presented by Digital in Berlin. Check out our Facebook page to win tickets.
