20 years is a great achievement for any band – join art-pop activits Chicks on Speed at the Volkshühne this May to celebrate their birthday.
Chicks on Speed is a feminist music and fine art ensemble, formed in Munich in 1997, when members Australian Alex Murray-Leslie and New Yorker Melissa Logan met at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Though Chicks on Speed reached cult status throughout the 2000s as catalysts of the musical genre electroclash, Chicks on Speed were actually founded as a multidisciplinary art group working in performance art, electronic dance music, collage graphics, textile design and fashion.
About 20 years ago, Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan formed the art collective Chicks on Speed in the courtyard of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. From then on, they have been experimenting at the interstices of design and electropop, frequently touching on themes like commercialisation and mass production and continuously expanding the limits of their creative language.
Chicks on Speed has already collaborated with the likes of Douglas Gordon, Francesca von Habsburg, Yoko Ono, Karl Lagerfeld, Anat Ben David and Peter Weibel. They have published books, regularly give talks and perform at international festivals and in well-known museums and galleries such as the Centre Pompidou, Venice Biennale or MoMA in New York. Celebrating their anniversary accordingly, they will present their unique mix of new media, fashion hacks and visual live music entitled On Speed: Chicks flying for 20 years along with numerous guests in the Großes Haus, Volksbühne.
