A scene in front of the counter: a boisterous music student tries out the recorder range, while an elderly gentleman plays ‘La valse d’Amélie’ by Yann Tiersen on the electric piano. A metal band’s guitars howl in the amplifier test room and the seller offers his goods online on the teleshopping channel. The postman always arrives at 5 pm to pick up the parcels in the affiliated post office… Pictures from the everyday life of a music shop, yesterday and today. A sociotope of music production, the music shop is filled with shy late starters and nerdy professional musicians. It is also a place of nostalgia, with memories of youthful dreams mingling with new aspirations.
In the online music theatre installation ‘Das Musikgeschäft’, composer Neo Hülcker brings such a shop, with all its instruments, rooms, the shop counter and repair corner, onto the online stage (13 & 14 February 2021) in order to present this place in its socio-musical everyday life. The work features 9 very different musicians and performers including the Berlin performer and composer Henry Wilde aka Antonia Baehr; the actors Heinrich Horwitz and Armin Wieser; the clarinetist Carola Schaal and the young percussionist David Nemtsov. The audience is invited to watch the hustle and bustle of music commerce throughout the evening, to attend, and perhaps even buy an instrument while teleshopping.
