Dope Body‘s new album, Kunk, (which drops on August 28th) will hit you like a ton of bricks. Kunk tones are that of a pure, unfiltered primitive nature, like a funky predator stalking its prey. Comprised of the unhinged jams and riffs muscled around between takes recording last year’s Lifer, Kunk is a toxic mutation of a record, compiled and edited into songs of the most elastic, loose variety.
While Lifer presents an uneasy, blackened cloak shrouding tightly composed rock anthems, Kunk goes straight for the kill from the first needle drop. The brutal shriek-blasts of Zachary Utz’s guitar coupled with Andrew Laumann’s gutteral howl rip through the pores of the thick, grinding rhythm section of Dave Jacober and John Jones like cleavers through chunks of rancid meat: Kunk rises from the ashes of Liferlike a flaming phoenix dripping vengeful, hot flesh.
[bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=33056765 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small] Dope Body earned their lofty reputation as a live band from years of thrashing around sweaty basements across the USA and stinky dungeons across Europe; Kunk showcases their expertise in bringing these gritty sounds to the forefront, like a gut-punch to the seedy underbelly. If the riffs don’t grab you, the menacing glitches into controlled chaos will!Cities Aviv is one of the foremost disarming performers I have had the opportunity of watching. With a marriage of old guard expression and contemporary practice, He has garnered critical acclaim for his unorthodox approach that defies genre boundaries. Partly due to a catalog which shifts between amplified soul, industrious punk, and dissonant street rap, Cities Aviv remains a mainstay amongst progressive circles.
