Ekin Fil and Biblo aka Ekin and Pinar Üzeltüzenci are siblings and two celebrated young musicians from the growing experimental, hypnagogic and lo-fi music scene in Istanbul.
[audio:xxx-xxx.mp3]Their music can best be described as a mélange of Mazzy Star, Pocahaunted, Grouper, Bestcoast and Inca Ore – and would fit perfectly in the artist roster of a label like Not Not Fun or Mexican Summer.
In Ekin Fil’s recent album Language, released on tape via Root Strata, reverberant chords ring out from hidden spaces in Istanbul. Chants are channeled from an alien zone … cold, dark and hidden. Remembered memories smear across a cityscape at night.
Operating out of Istanbul, Fil’s Turkish roots, while not an overpowering influence, are certainly present in her songs. Throughout, Language is a fractured and beautiful exercise in ghostly melodies that hang on just enough to make a lasting impact but then quickly disappear. It’s one of the year’s best tapes and promises some truly great things going forward.

In the music of Ekin’s sister Pinar aka Biblo you feel the intensity again and again in an almost painful way when it peeps through the curtain of drones and noise. She is a sister in mind for acts like Inca Ore, Pocahaunted and Kuupuu, who amalgamate folk traditions, vanguard experiments, improvisation and outsider art. Her record “On Ugliness” was released in a limited edition of 200 pieces as the first ever record on Quetzi Records in may 2010.
The evening at O Tannenbaum will be rounded off by djs Decent and Nikakis.
