Entangled Sounds kicks off its series on materiality and musical practices with a double bill at KM28: Odd Narrative (a collaboration between Wouter Jaspers and Hainbach) and Felicity Mangan performing Quadra’frog’ic.
Hainbach creates distant, tape-loop infused sets of sound through which Jaspers’ electro-acoustic machinations crackle, ache and croon. Sometimes an ancient drum machine insists on a stoic rhythm that grounds these two accomplished musicians before they drift off in a haze of echoes and rusty reverb tanks. ODD NARRATIVE mesmerize with their refreshingly loose and gridless music; both live and on record.
Quadra’frog’ic by Felicity Mangan is a quasi-bioacoustic piece utilizing found and self-recorded animal sounds amplified through a stereo sound system and transducers attached to found objects. Felicity is an Australian sound artist and composer based in Berlin, Germany since 2008. In different situations such as solo performance, collaborative projects with other musicians or installation, she plays her found native Australian animal archive, either through a stereophonic system or often via hand-made speakers made from recycled or displaced objects.
More on the Entangled Sounds series: Featuring performers using self-made instruments (acoustic or electronic) and the materiality of audio media, such as turntables or tape players, this series foregrounds object-specific sounds, resonant bodies and (meta-)mechanical motion. On the fringes of experimental, electronic and popular music, as well as morphing sound sculptures with concerts, Entangled Sounds invites visitors to explore individual artistic practices and the interaction between artist, instrument, venue and audience.
