Karaoke Kalk and Jeff Özdemir kick of their new series at Alter Roter Löwe Rein in Neukölln with a special live concert by guest Felix Gebhard.
Berlin-based musician and mass collaborator, Jeff Özdemir, is back with a new double vinyl and this time he’s gone for gold. With cinematographic soundscapes, thick bass lines, tangible percussion, eerie keys and charming vocals, this synergetic masterpiece treads the boundaries between jazz, Gameboy sounds, chanson, psychedelic desert, soul, minimal, seventies pop, dub, electronic and classical music with a hint of a John Carpenter-esque style to boot. Rooted in the past but spanning to the future, Jeff Özdemir & Friends vol. 2 refuses to be pigeon-holed into any one decade or genre, transcending these categories without destroying them.
‘Meditations’, the new album by Felix Gebhard, is the follow-up to the cassette ‘Limitations’, released in June 2016. While the latter’s character was to a great deal forged out of its free-form approach to recording – often hastily improvised between different locations – ‘Meditations’ is more focused and structured, and contains music that in parts comes in almost classic song-formats.
The main instrument here is an electric baritone guitar, whose lowest tone, B, runs through all of the album’s eight compositions, sometimes as a subtle hum, sometimes in form of loud distorted drones. The addition of a variety of instruments, from analog synthesizers to harmonica to drums and percussion gives ‘Meditations’ a wide spectrum of sounds, at times making it feel like a group effort rather than the doings of a single person. The use of a proper recording facility, Studio 65 in the Wedding-district of Berlin, allowed Gebhard to shape this new work into something of, at least by his own standards, higher fidelity.
