Fields of Sound, Fields of Light is a gathering of visual and field recording artists. Performing during the evening are Ravenact, Gosia Lehmann, Udo Noll, Martyna Poznańska & Peter Cusack and Israel Martínez.
Ravenact is the new project by violinist Saara Wallraf (Berlin) and pianist Liz Kosack (NYC/Berlin). They move between voices, instruments, light and shadows and respond to a call into subtext and interspace. Based on Saara’s poetry they compose and explore the dimensions of dialogue.
[vimeo 84001224 w=620&h=300]Gosia Lehmann is Berlin based visual artist working primarily with moving image. She uses diverse tools, combines analogue techniques with digital media, plays with the potential of spaces including interactions with the viewer’s perception in order to provoke site-specific experiences.
‘Walking Distance’ is an essay film about walking, getting lost and just wandering around. It exists between narrative and documentary, consists of images, city recordings and word collages that reflect on the subject of geography and navigation in the everyday context. The film is based on ideas of exploration, careful observation and experiment, but also embodies the emotional aspects of the simple act of walking.
[vimeo 99650950 w=620&h=300]Udo Noll, through the ‘radio aporee’ website, has pioneered the idea of open access online sound mapping. The site has since expanded to explore locative media, realtime radio and the subtle links between the real and virtual sound worlds. He is also a very active field recordist.
The ‘Gray Line’ is dusk, the atmospheric time between night and day that circulates the earth as it rotates. In ‘Surfing the Gray Line’ Udo streams and combines field recordings from places in tonight’s gray line direct from the aporee map.
The new project by Martyna Poznańska and Peter Cusack combines their interests in field recording and live performance. What atmospheres and chance juxtapositions are created when such recordings are mixed and combined? Which sounds remain recognisable and which do not?
Martyna Poznańska works with sound, image and performance. Her research focuses upon performative noise reduction, industrial and urban atmospheres (field recording practice). Her installations investigate the themes of remembering and forgetting, growth, decay and transformation.
[vimeo 13866137 w=620&h=300]Peter Cusack is a field recordist and sound artist with a long interest in the everyday sound environment and how we interact with it.
Israel Martínez reflects on social topics through sound and music. He creates multi-channel sound pieces, video installations, site-specific projects, actions, interventions and graphic works through the use of photography, typing, photocopying, and other media. He gained a Distinction Award of Prix Ars Electronica (2007), was a DAAD Artists-in-Residence in Berlin (2012) and at the MuseumsQuartier, Vienna (2014).

“This series explores the permanent synchronicity and dissociation that may be achieved through the dissection and re-configuration of audio-visual material. They are reflections suggesting a continuous displacement between sounds and images.”
