Fourtrack: Godmother + Jackie Charles at Schokoladen / Wednesday, 12.12.2018

The self-titled debut album by Berlin-based GODMOTHER arrives via New Pangea on September 21, 2018 – officially the last day of summer. Coming to terms with one’s own mortality is a frequent theme in art. ‘Godmother’ starts with this trope and takes it a step further, offering a tragicomic meditation on the annihilation of Homo Sapiens – and embracing its evolutionary successor. We’re living in dark times, and ‘Godmother’ reflects that – but the album offers a notable counterbalance with catchy melodies and a sense of humor. Its nine songs were written by Joey Hansom, deemed “the Gilbert & Sullivan of LGBTQ-with-a-capital-Q lyrics” by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle) upon having seen the clip for “MTFTM” from the act’s previous ‘Transgenre’ EP.

Jackie Charles started in Berlin 2015 as the love child, band and alter ego of songwriter Kaja Bremnes. After a string of concerts the band grew to become a darling on the continental-european underground scene. With synths as the base and reverby guitar twang, the band places somewhere within the illusive dream pop genre. But Jackie Charles have been compared to everything from David Bowie and the Cure to nowadays Ariel Pink and Alvvays. Or “Existensialist-new wave-postpunk-dad rock” as was once commented. Jackie has one foot firmly placed on an Arctic Norwegian fishing boat and the other runs free on the rooftops of Berlin’s Skyline. The nihilist lyrics remind you of how good it feels when everything is shit and thoroughly suits the warmth of a pre-apocalyptic summer.
