In 2017 Classic Voice magazine chose »in vain« by Georg Friedrich Haas as the most impressive composition of the 21st century to date. The piece refers to the graphics by Maurits C. Escher and their depiction of perspective impossibilities and optical illusions. For sound reception, melodies, well-tempered pitches and metric structures are equivalent to the function of railings and the usual step height when climbing stairs: Even subtle deviations cause irritation.
