A mighty night of dub at Yaam this Febraury with Jahtari, Mungo’s Hi Fi and iLLBiLLY HiTEC and many more all rocking the house.
In case you haven’t heard of us so far (which is more than likely at the moment) just some words of explanation about JAHTARI. We are a small record label based in Leipzig / Germany and we produce a kind of music here which we call – for the lack of a better term – DIGITAL LAPTOP REGGAE (DLR).This means nothing else but that we produce first and above all REGGAE music (or DUB) in it’s classical sense, which in itself is nothing new, but since we’re having a background of mostly electronic music we’re doing this with the only tool that is obvious to use for that purpose – a COMPUTER, and a computer only. So, above all we are a REGGAE label. You won’t find any straight bassdrums or Dub-Techno here, you’ll find classic DUB done with a computer. But one could philosophize on this topic with no end so if you would like to read more about it check out our THEORY section or our highly recommended REGGAE HISTORY, where I will explain the ideas and concepts behind JAHTARI and DLR more detailed and with lots of (sound) examples.
Mungo’s Hi Fi are a Glasgow-based sound system and production unit who pull off that rare trick of making reggae/dancehall that is original and of quality. Mungo’s was the brainchild of two likeminded dance DJs at the turn of the millennium, inspired by King Tubby, Prince Jammy and the UK’s Unity Sounds. True to reggae/dancehall’s DIY ethos, they built their first sound system from speakers found in a skip and began producing on an old Atari. They started inviting visiting vocalists to their regular nights in Glasgow to hold the mic and then join them in the studio. Following some early recordings on London’s Dubhead records, including debut album Mungo’s Hi Fi Meets Brother Culture, they founded their Scotch Bonnet label in 2005.
iLLBiLLY HiTEC is a Berlin based collective, that is out to put the rootsy vibe back into modern productions, blending influences of dub, cumbia, bass music, hiphop and jungle into a very own style of reggae. Live they team up with MCs and guest musicians, to fuse the raw energy of a traditional band performance, with the flow, excitement and hype of a DJ set. Various single releases, the first album „Reggaetronics“ and growing feedback on hundreds of club and festival shows in Europe, Asia and Latin America, made iLLBiLLY HiTEC become one of the most exciting newcomers of it´s genre. With the release of the second album „Reggae Not Dead“, they again show musical versatility and add an even wider range of flavors to their top level live performances. The group will be back on tour from spring 2016 on.
