This October, jazzexzess returns to House of Music with a double bill of Berlin-based projects: the record release of bassist Felix Henkelhausen’s Deranged Particles and guitarist Andreas Willers’ playful trio Eric Plays Derek.
Revered Berlin-based bassist Felix Henkelhausen presents his latest project Deranged Particles, in the special record release concert at jazzexzess. The album, to be released on Berlin’s own Fun in the Church, features some of Henkelhausen’s closest collaborators, including tenor saxophonist Philipp Gropper, trumpeter Percy Pursglove and vibraphonist Evi Filippou. Each member of the band brings a blend of strong emotional expressiveness and versatile virtuosity.
The project’s title, Deranged Particles is emblematic of the band’s musical concept, describing the state of abstract particles that are in motion independently but collide from time to time; blurring the lines between the individual and the collective. The complex, contrapuntal group sound is something of an analog to the polyrhythms that reside at the heart of the music, as seemingly isolated lines not only somehow fit together, but seem to rely on the puzzle-like assemblage to function. With this particular constellation, Deranged Particles makes way for both percussive complexity and colourful expressiveness.
The night continues with Eric Plays Derek, a trio led by renowned Berlin guitarist Andreas Willers, with bassist Jan Roder and drummer Christian Marien. The project playfully asks, “What would Eric Clapton sound like playing with Derek Bailey?”
By juxtaposing these two musical icons—one a pillar of blues rock, the other a pioneer of free improvisation—Willers and his trio create a collision of styles that draws on influences from across genres. With nods to everyone from Paul McCartney to John McLaughlin, Charles Mingus to Gentle Giant, Eric Plays Derek explores the often tense relationship between jazz and rock, offering a provocative and avant-garde take on the familiar.
