Jazzexzess returns to House of Music in Friedrichshain in April for another first class double bill featuring Ganna and Kuhn Fu.
In her solo performance with loops and effects, Ganna Gryniva combines the authenticity and traditions of Ukrainian singing with contemporary composition. It all begins with a simple melody, which unfolds into a space filled with unexpected harmonies, rhythms, and atmospheres—live and solely with her voice. The ancient folk songs of her homeland are deeply moving, even if one does not understand the lyrics without knowledge of Ukrainian. Yet, they sound wonderfully poetic and soulful, skillfully contrasted by the loops, samples, and sounds that Ganna uses to envelop her enchanting singing.
The band KUHN FU lives up to its martial name with an explosive blend of “Jazz Punk Psychedelia.” Guitarist and master of ceremonies Christian Kühn and his ensemble throw Zappa into cabaret, collide surf sounds with metal riffs, and weave Shakespeare, Brecht, and Monty Python into their music. Unrestrained and fearless, KUHN FU pushes the boundaries of jazz-rock—oscillating between parody and seriousness, bursting with energy and playfulness. Originally formed as a quartet, KUHN FU exists in many forms, ranging from quartet to septet, octet, and nonet. The core members are Christian Kühn (guitar), Ziv Taubenfeld (bass clarinet), Esat Ekincioglu (bass), and George Hadow (drums). Since 2021, the band has grown to include musicians such as John Dikeman (tenor sax), Sofia Salvo (baritone saxophone), Frank Gratkowski (alto sax, clarinet, flute), and Tobias Delius (tenor sax, clarinet ), who play the compositions with great panache.
