This autumn, jazzexzess proudly presents the Berlin premiere of acclaimed New York trumpeter Peter Evans’ latest project, Extra. In this electro-acoustic trio, Evans is joined by Swedish bassist Petter Eldh and American drummer Jim Black. Their debut marks the opening of jazzexzess’ final concert season of the year, inviting jazz and experimental music enthusiasts to Friedrichshain for one last time in 2024.
What unites the three musicians in Extra is their shared ambition to go beyond conventional improvisation, experimenting with parameters like timbre, dynamics, form, and structure. They have a distinct vision for how improvisation should be organised and the sound it should produce. Evans‘ compositions create new spaces that blend the spontaneity of free improvisation with the sensitivity of chamber music, all while incorporating Eldh’s and Black’s inventive use of electronics.
Eldh, Black, and Evans have collaborated for years, with this new trio evolving from earlier partnerships. Evans and Eldh previously played together in the quartet Amok Amor alongside Christian Lillinger, while Evans and Black have shared numerous stages across various projects.
Their performance at Kantine am Berghain paves the way for Peter Evans’ debut release on We Jazz Records with ‘Extra’, their new album set for release on October 25th. With this record, Evans introduces this bold new ensemble, who dive headfirst into eight dynamic compositions. While Peter Evans is often lauded for his remarkable technical prowess, he is first and foremost serving his broader musical vision at all times. That is, the remarkable musical ability of the trio doesn’t outshine how together the unit is in realising the music at hand. The strong rhythmic base of Eldh and Black allows for Evans to push his compositions to their limits and for the band to find new avenues of expression together while doing so. This is effortless creative music by a band that’s comfortable together while pushing each other forward at all times.
