Transcending musical genres and instead heading straight for something more elemental, Selvhenter‘s music creates a strikingly direct, physical sonic experience comprised of polyrhythms, acoustic and electric melodies, heavy music and improvised beauty.
Since their founding in Copenhagen in 2010, drummers Jaleh Negari and Anja Jacobsen, saxophonist Sonja LaBianca and trombonist Maria Bertel have developed a unique approach to making music that begins with the instrumentation of their instruments: two drummers who mesh just as frequently, as they go their own way, the trombone is made so loud by a bass amplifier that it rattles in the chest, and a saxophone is subjected to a series of effects that it is often unrecognizable.
Selvhenter work within their own idiom and draw on the personalities and interests of each player to create a highly collective music in which all four musicians immerse themselves in an overall sound that combines an improvised free jazz approach with experimental electronic music and avant-garde Noise collides.
RE: CALAMARI are four exceptional musicians: A pulsating unit – that’s what the band “RE: CALAMARI” stands for. The quartet around the Cologne bassist Oliver Lutz promises “a little more of everything”. In concrete terms, this means: more joy in playing, more energy, more passion.
The band includes Pablo Held, himself one of the most successful jazz pianists in Europe – as a sideman he inspires with a never-ending spiral of new thoughts and motifs. The Finnish saxophone virtuoso Tineke Postma, whose playing acts like a hurricane of pure passion and wildness, and Peter Gall, the drummer who enriches the music with his diverse and furious drumming. Together, these four outstanding musicians release an incomparable power according to the motto: “Now is the time to give it your all.
