This November, as part of jazzexzess’s autumn season, don’t miss the final concert of the year featuring the Berlin-based duo TRAINING, featuring Italian-born, UK-based bassist Ruth Goller. Also on the bill is Goller’s acclaimed project Skylla.
Frenetic free-jazz meets post-rock riffs and looming microtonal atmospheres in the sounds of drummer Max Andrzejewski and saxophonist Johannes Schleiermacher’s duo TRAINING. In 2023, they teamed up with the acclaimed electric bassist Ruth Goller, whose “thunderous bass-guitar hooks” have been lauded by The Guardian. The collaboration results in a fresh and energetic blend of winding grooves, instrumental-vocal interplay, and weightless unison melodies. Their Berlin debut celebrates the release of their album Threads to Knot, set to be released on Squama Records on October 18th, 2024.
Alongside TRAINING, Ruth Goller returns to the stage to present her celebrated project Skylla. In Skylla, Goller revisits the raw, untaught instincts of her teenage years as a punk musician. The project features a rotating cast of percussionists, adding layers of hypnotic and haunting patterns to her compositions. The Guardian has described Goller’s approach in Skylla as creating “demented nursery rhymes,” highlighting her unique blend of influences and her ability to craft evocative, immersive soundscapes.
As a bassist, vocalist, composer, and environmentalist, Goller is celebrated for her deep musical vision and originality. With Skylla, she offers a long-awaited focus on her solo work, delivering a piece that is both strikingly original and profoundly beautiful, described by The Quietus as “an entwining of bass and voice that feels like pure science fiction.”
