Kiezsalon’s second installment of the year features a rare performance of the A S S trio featuring acclaimed German musicians Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Günter Schickert and Schneider TM as well as the Polish pop-duo Coals.
Günter Schickert, Jochen Arbeit and Dirk Dresselhaus are three renowned Berlin guitarists. They epitomize three generations of experimental musicians: Schickert personifies the Krautrock of the 1970s, Arbeit 1980s post-punk and Dresselhaus the neo-electronica of the late 1990s/2000s period. Their artist approaches may differ on account of their diverse musical backgrounds, yet what they do have in common is a fundamental interest in developing the guitar as a sound object, seeking out unusual structures and harmonies. They now present the results of their explorations and ideas on a joint album.
The end product is very much more than just the sum of its parts, due not only to the participants’ different musical philosophies, but also through the use of instruments not usually associated with this type of music (e.g. balafon, conch, mbira, electronic drums, modular system). Their joint album concocts a kind of musical magic from a myriad of influences (Krautrock, psychedelic, free jazz, punk, industrial, techno, minimal-electronic and so forth) yet simultaneously transcends them to create a new form of music.
Coals is young duo from Poland under the leadership of Katarzyna Kowalczyk and Łukasz Rozmysłowski. The name of the band is connected to the region they come from – Silesia which is famous for coal mines. They started playing music in September 2014. They quickly made a name for themselves with a bunch of home-recorded songs they published on the internet.
“The somewhat creamy quality of Coals’ music is an experience akin to being wrapped up in cotton wool and sailing away on ebb tides of unperturbed bliss. It could well be down to the silky smooth voice of vocalist Katarzyna Kowalczyk or possibly the multi-instrumentation of Łukasz Rozmysłowski but the net result is gorgeously lush music that increases the anticipation of their yet-to-be released debut album.” and American Under the Radar magazine about them:”Coals mix in heavy helping of hip-hop beats, creating a hypnotic mix between the dirty club and darkened city streets.” (the quietus)
TUUM is Brandon Rosenbluth, 1/2 of the shamanic power electronics duo Shaddah Tuum and co-founder of the Berlin-based avant label collective Portals Editions as well as the event series and online magazine UnReaL, in his guise as xorzyzt. TUUM DJ sets are a total immersion in alternate realities of sound, body and mind. Psychonauts welcome.
