This August, the Kiezsalon visits Neukölln’s contemporary art centre KINDL, a former brewery known for its distinctive industrial architecture. On Friday, 8 August, we present Cork-based songwriter Elaine Howley and Highland bagpiper Erwan Keravec. We continue on Saturday with Ulla and Adriaan de Roover.
Elaine Howley is an Irish vocalist and producer who merges experimentation with a love for classic songwriting and melody. She is a member of the psychedelic rock group The Altered Hours, ambient trio Crevice and cinematic duo HowlBux. Her debut solo album The Distance Between Heart and Mouth was selected as Irish music magazine The Thin Air’s album of the year in 2022, while Pitchfork called it “a spectral slow burn that refuses to trip over itself to get anywhere in particular,” adding, “By absorbing the wisdom of the process, Howley permits her craft to resound deeper than ever.”
Erwan Keravec is a Highland bagpiper, composer and improviser who moves beyond his instrument’s traditional context to work in free jazz, noise music and contemporary composition for solo pipes, voice and choir. His past collaborators include Beñat Achiary, Mats Gustafsson and Heiner Goebbels as well as choreographers Boris Charmatz and Gaëlle Bourges. In 2024 he released the album 8 Sonneurs Pour Philip Glass which World Music Central said “demonstrates his profound ability to transform and reinterpret” the minimalist composer’s music.
The KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art is located in a former brewery in Neukölln, established in the early 20th century. The building, which once housed the KINDL Brewery, retains much of its industrial character, including a 30-meter-tall tower and 600-square-meter glass-walled brewery hall. The site now hosts rotating art exhibitions and performances, serving as a prominent venue for contemporary art.
