Kiezsalon w/ The Space Lady and FUJI||||||||||TA at DAS MINSK | Thursday, 26.06.2025

This summer, the Kiezsalon takes its first trip to Potsdam, setting up at DAS MINSK every Thursday evening in June. This time featuring Japanese sound artist FUJI||||||||||TA and American synth pop legend The Space Lady.

In the late 1970s, North American cult performer The Space Lady – alias Susan Dietrich – started playing on the streets of Boston. Armed with an accordion slung over her shoulders, she performed quirky covers of pop, country, and folk songs, all while dressed in a costume that has since become her signature: a winged Asterix-like helmet with a red, blinking light bulb on top.

The Space Lady is known for her kitschy keyboard-with-built-in-drum-machine sound and her enigmatic performances. Whether performing her own songs or covers (including Steppenwolf’s Born to Be Wild or Suicide’s Ghost Riders in the Sky), seeing the cult musician live is a charming and intimate experience. Her playful, straightforward, and low-tech sound has made The Space Lady a beloved live artist for adventurous audiences.

FUJI|||||||||||TA is a sound artist living in Japan. His unique practice utilises various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009 Fujita hand fabricated a Pipe Organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Fujita conceived and built it using his imagination, without any prior or specialized knowledge.

Since 2006 he has had many solo performances and collaborative works with musicians, including ∈Y∋ (Boredoms), Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, and Koichi Makigami. He has presented his sound installation works in many contexts: the work “CELL”, which made audible the sounds of black soldier fly maggots buried in dirt, was exhibited in Sapporo International Art Festival 2017 and attracted a great deal of interest in Fujita’s artistic practice.
