We’re thrilled to finally host our first Siberian act at Kiezsalon: Namgar. The four-piece will transform the Musikbrauerei into a fulcrum of shamanic folk-magic. Joining them is American post-modern troubadour Eric Chenaux and Berlin’s foremost dub-conrète selector Cera Khin.
Namgar is the name of singer Namgar Lhasaranova’s band project. Traditional Mongolian instruments such as the Yatag (a 13-string zither), the Chanza (a three-string lute) as well as electric bass and drums form the basis for Lhasaranova’s haunting singing voice, cunningly alternating between childlike and cyclopic registers. Her melodies and lyrics are inspired by songs and myths of the Buryats and discuss horses, heroes and the vastness of the Mongolian steppe.
Eric Chenaux is a true post-modern troubadour, with a body of solo work documented across five albums released on the Constellation label since 2006, centering around Chenaux’s dextrous, fried guitar playing juxtaposed with a gorgeously clear and lyrical singing voice. An ingenious recombinant use of traditional folk and consort music tropes in earlier albums has over time evolved into a wholly original form of balladry, shot through with a singular vernacular of improvised electric and nylon-string guitar excursions.
There are certain artists who leave an impression even relatively early on in their careers. Cera Khin’s first recorded output may have only just materialized, but it builds on an intriguing web of radio shows and mixes that point to a sonic instinct that demands your attention. That’s not to say what she does is particularly showy or boisterous – in fact quite the opposite. There’s an understated meditative vibe that hovers over her selections, and of course now that vibe has been crystalised on her new label LazyTapes with releases that saw label boss Cera Khin split two cassettes with fellow Young Echo figurehead Ossia, along with jungle deconstructionist Christoph De Babalon & a solo affair from Swedish techno-futurist Peder Mannerfelt.
