Kiezsalon Opening w/ Sculpture and Gajek at Musikbrauerei / Saturday, 25.04.2015

From April until October 2015 the Kiezsalon offers a forum for innovative musical activity beyond genre boundaries and is a meeting point for friends as well as loners, conversations and party, lovers and those who are just curious. As an interface between pop music and avantgarde the series presents compact performances by artists from diverse genres, origin and popularity – initiated by Digital in Berlin and taking place at one of the last authentic locations in Prenzlauer Berg, the 120 year old Schneider Brewery.

Sculpture is an opto-musical agglomerate made up of Dan Hayhurst (music), and Reuben Sutherland (animation). Their first test hit upon a psychedelic palette, the sensorial intricacies of which they continue to explore. Performance is central to their work, and feeds back into all aspects of the process. Sculpture’s output includes music, film and video work, and multi-sensory live shows.

Their performances are an amalgam of electronic music, kinetic art, comic strips, abstract animation, audiovisual cut-ups – a mix of analog and digital practices – tape manipulation, samples, found sounds, aleatoric and algorithmic programming and live improvisation. Dan plays media devices and electronic instruments. Reuben plays video zoetrope turntable.

After Chris Clark had passed some of Gajek’s sheer endless output over to Modeselektor, quite a few listening sessions followed. Ranging from post-rocky electronica to complex and moody renderings of intricate introverted beat structures to a mutant dance music, a whole audioscape had to be discovered. There are songs and tracks and experiments there, morphed vocals and reverberated non human instruments, complex percussion patterns and sweet athmospheres.

There are songs and tracks and experiments there, morphed vocals and reverberated non human instruments, complex percussion patterns and sweet athmospheres, but in all these different paths and moods, a penchant for working with a leitmotif could be traced. One is quickly drawn into this music, challenged to find the thread and follow it into its different outfits and scenarios.

The Kiezsalon Prenzlauer Berg is presented by Digital in Berlin, Musikbrauerei und taz. die tageszeitung. Kindly supported by Musicboard Berlin and Lux Eleven. Check out our Facebook page to win tickets.
