From April until October 2015 the Kiezsalon offers a forum for innovative musical activity beyond genre boundaries and is a meeting point for friends as well as loners, conversations and party, lovers and those who are just curious. As an interface between pop music and avantgarde the series presents compact performances by artists from diverse genres, origin and popularity – initiated by Digital in Berlin and taking place at one of the last authentic locations in Prenzlauer Berg, the 120 year old Schneider Brewery.
Tomaga is two musicians on a quest to deconstruct their normal sonic palette and create a new and unfamiliar sound world. Having played as musicians for years in bands such as The Oscillation, Shit N Shine, Neon Neon, Raime, Voice Of Seven Thunders, Luke Roberts and countless others, Tomaga channels multi-instrumentalism into music that is by turns reminiscent of industrial, jazz, psychedelia and minimalism.
Rather than the complex, abstract sound that we might have expected to result from their totally unfettered musical explorations, the duo’s minimalist compositions are darkly psychedelic, elusive and deeply imbued with images – as though they have set some curiously unsettled, surreal dreams to music. After their first, self-produced cassette, Sleepy Jazz For Tired Cats, which was released last year, Tomaga returns this autumn with its first album Futura Grotesk. The two multi-instrumentalists offer us a stunning first experimental work that sounds mature, rich and refreshingly original.
Grischa Lichtenberger is an electronic music producer, visual and installation artist living in berlin. Grown up in a withdrawn farmhouse, his artistic approach developed from surveying the landscape as reference for the condition of art production itself. Landscape, in this sense, is understood not only as the picturesque or sublime recreational facility of nature, but as an interaction between the traces of biographical history and the material concreteness of the present surroundings.
The aggressive tone in his sound design has its counterpart in an emotional depth of the musical structure – a hermetic idiosyncrasy of rhythm and melodies that implement a personal handwriting into the arrangement and sculpture of the sound elements. The music aims towards a paradoxic parallelism of introspective moods on the dance floor and unsettling contemplations in an intimate listening situation. Tumbling between funky, highly energetic beats and trembling, concerning melodies, an almost tactile honesty reaches out to the individual listener.
Plants and Empire works with sound produced by plants, received by plants, transformed and generated by plants. The language that one associates with plants is often heavily personalised, plants are sad, they are happy, they are forlorn, they yearn for life. We talk to them, play music to them in order to stimulate them.
Schneider TM is a multidimensional music project from Dirk Dresselhaus. Since the late 80’s he is active in different musical fields. From 1989 until 1997 he played and sang in indie-noiserock- and pop-bands like Locust Fudge or Hip Young Things before he became more active in electronic music around 1997 with his project Schneider TM, which is responsible for a couple of experimental electro-freak-pop albums and indie-hits like Reality Check, Frogtoise, Pacman / Shopping Cart or a coverversion of a song by The Smiths called The Light 3000, a collaboration with Kptmichigan that was hugely acclaimed by John Peel, The Wire etc..
