Musikbrauerei has long served as the spiritual base of Kiezsalon, and we’re happy to return home with performances by the Japanese art-pop musician Tujiko Noriko, who’s currently based in Paris, Rahma Quartet, an experimental ensemble whose members are split between Berlin and Munich, and Osaka-based electronic duo KAKUHAN.
This October we return to the 120-year-old, historical Musikbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg. Tucked away between Greifswalder Straße and Volkspark Friedrichshain, the former Schneider brewery is a rare building in east Berlin for having survived, unspoiled, the creeping tide of gentrification.
Tujiko Noriko is a Paris-based Japanese musician, actor and director. Since the early 2000s, she has released several albums of experimental pop, singing bittersweet melodies in Japanese and English over glitchy, downtempo electronics and electro-acoustic arrangements. Tujiko Noriko’s latest album Crépuscule I & II was released on Editions Mego earlier this year.
Pitchfork’s review states the ‘new two-part album exchanges her colourful pop patchwork for soft, luminous ambient music of alien beauty and human warmth.’
Berlin/Munich-based Rahma Quartet comprises vocalist Rasha Ragab, Argentinian woodwind player Lucio Capece, sound object artist Christoph Nicolaus (stone harp) and Werner Dafeldecker on double bass. In 2022, the quartet worked on a new piece entitled Mercy is called down by Mercy to the last; they will perform this at the Kiezsalon.
The word “Kakuhan” in Japanese means “stirring” of various elements, which perfectly describes the experimental duo KAKUHAN‘s alchemic approach to music. Together electronic producer Koshiro Hino and cellist Yuki Nakagawa combine raw digital music and bowed cello in syncopated songs that embark on unexplored territory in electronic music. Their critically acclaimed debut album Metal Zone combines grimey, cybernetic club music with freakish rhythmic interplay and dense sonic textures.
Playing alongside our live musicians is Hiroshima-born Berlin-based DJ, sound artist, and composer Mieko Suzuki, gracing the Musikbrauerei with her hybrid set. Since 2009, she has been running the multidisciplinary series Kookoo at OHM, one of our favorite club nights.
