The scope of the 29 Klangwerkstatt Berlin Festival for Contemporary Music has been set to wide angle. Created in 1990, the festival brings together internationally renowned ensembles and children’s and youth groups from Berlin. Professional musicians of all ages meet young talents and have the Contemporary Music as a common language. 12 concerts and musical performances, as well as 6 short musical lunches comprise the festival’s program from the 8. to the 17. November 2019. Festival locations are the Kunstquartier Bethanien (Kreuzberg) and the Villa Elisabeth (Mitte).
WEITE, meaning ‘expanse’, the title of the festival 2019 has room for action and association. It also implies ‘far-sightedness’ and ‘vision’. ‘Weite’ refers to a boundless and sensual perception of music and is essential to devising visions and utopias. ‘Weite’ also contrasts last years theme ‘Grenze’, meaning ‘boundary’. The Klangwerkstatt Berlin 2018 contemplated what separates, reevaluated border violations and tried to demolish boundaries. The ‘Weite’ was not very far back then, but now it means more than overcoming boundaries. It aims for their non-existence. To listen into the distance means to be open to novel sounds, to look for the obvious in the distance and to find the surprising nearby.
