KNM CONTEMPORARIES at Radialsystem / Saturday, 2.3.2024

With »KNM CONTEMPORARIES – Music in the Making«, the ensemble KNM Berlin presents the cutting edge of contemporary compositions. The 2024 edition highlights one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music, the Swiss composer Beat Furrer.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the ensemble explores how Beat Furrer’s work resonates with the younger international generation of composers. In addition to rarely performed works by Beat Furrer, including his solo for cello, KNM Berlin presents composers closely associated with him: The Greek composer Zesses Seglias is interested in the corporeality of sound and musical language structures.

The latest works by Daniela Terranova from Italy deal with the material from which instruments are made. Sehyung Kim from Kazakhstan situates his works across borders between improvised music, orchestral works and music theatre. The music of Filipino artist Feliz Anne Reyes Macahis is as if »woven with a steady hand from fine glass threads« and yet speaks passionately through a complicated world of vocal, instrumental and electronic means. Prior to the concert, the participating composers will present their works and aesthetic positions. The KNM CONTEMPORARIES series thus provides the framework for a pluralistic forum for contemporary modes of composing, listening and discussion.

Since its founding in 1988, Ensemble KNM Berlin has presented programs throughout the world that reflect a curiosity to explore the unknown and a willingness to confront the most pressing themes of our times. Since 2016, KNM Berlin has been increasingly committed to musical, multi-perspective networking with intercultural collaborations worldwide. KNM was awarded the German Record Critics’ Prize in 2021, 2009 and 2010 for its collaboration with the composer Beat Furrer.
