The second KONTRAKLANG concert evening this year features ENSEMBLE ADAPTER from Berlin and the Finnish DEFUNENSEMBLE. The groups will each perform their own repertoire as well as a collective work. Together they will interpret the piece “Avaruusrauniot” by Kimmo Kuokkala, the musical textures of which create an intensely meditative atmosphere.
The collaboration between Ensemble Adapter (Berlin) and defunensemble (Helsinki) is part of “Aus Finland”, a project dedicated to the aim of developing cooperation between professional musicians from Finland and German speaking Europe, initiated by the organization “Music Finland”. Following concerts in Helsinki and Kiel, the Berlin concert marks the end of the joint project between the two ensembles.

Although founded only in 2009, the DEFUNENSEMBLE has already earned a reputation as one of the most important ensembles for contemporary music in Finland. The reason for this is their powerful interpretations of electroacoustic music, at which the group has excelled in a short time.
In Finland, the defunensemble has performed sensational premieres as well as works from both the classical and contemporary repertoires of electroacoustic music. At the same time, the group develops their own works using the latest technologies. Innovative live concepts created under the artistic direction of Sami Klemola allow supposedly unwieldy pieces of contemporary music to appear in a new light.

ADAPTER is a German-Icelandic ensemble for contemporary music based in Berlin. The core of the group is a quartet of flute, clarinet, harp and percussion. Together with selected instrumentalists, this chamber ensemble can expand to up to ten musicians. In addition to numerous premier performances, Adapter is dedicated to an individual and international repertoire of contemporary music both in concert and in the studio.
In their own projects and in co-productions, the ensemble explores boundary-crossing methods in various genres. With a progressive and powerful style, Ensemble Adapter makes an important contribution to current developments in the cultural scene. Ensemble Adapter has been active both in Berlin and internationally since 2004. For many years they have placed an emphasis on the Scandinavian region, in particular Iceland and Finland.
