KONTRAKLANG with Furt + Zinc & Copper Works at Heimathafen / Thursday, 12.02.2015

Kontraklang is a new monthly contemporary music concert series at Heimathafen Neukölln curated by Marta Blazanovic-Drefers, Andreas Engström and Christopher Williams and funded by the Berlin Cultural Affairs Department.

The series reflects the diversity of Berlin’s contemporary music scenes, and at the same time supports their common cutting edges. In this way the curators maintain a broad definition of the term “contemporary”: the focus is not just on conventionally notated chamber music, but also on exchange between neighbouring fields of sound art, composer-performer practices, media-based approaches and music theater. Through dynamic and eclectic programs that question boundaries of style, generations of musicians and gender, Kontraklang welcomes an equally diverse audience from locals to expert listeners and tourists.

FURT is the electronic composition/performance duo founded by Richard Barrett and Paul Obermayer in London in 1986. Their intricate musical forms primarily use concrete sampled and processed sound materials and employ both free improvisation and systematic composition. Barrett is active as both composer and improvising performer. As a composer he has been associated with the term New Complexity because of his intricate notation and scores. Much of his music has been written for Australia’s ELISION ensemble. Obermayer is a performer and composer and works mainly with live electronics.

He plays regularly with the improvising trio BARK! and has also performed music by Globokar, Nono, Stockhausen and others. In 2005 the expanded ‘FURT orchestra’, fORCH, was formed in which the electronic duo is combined with vocalists and instrumentalists. Barrett and Obermayer are also regular members of the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble. A unique composer-performer duo, FURT will prepare new work for this performance. A new composition by Richard Barrett, Eiszeiten, will be premiered by Zinc & Copper Works in the same concert.

Zinc & Copper Works was founded by Robin Hayward in 2005. A trio of horn, trombone and tuba forms the basis for a variable ensemble of brass instruments, which alongside its musical virtuosity is distinguished by innovative and pioneering research within the area of experimental music. Using distorted embouchure and experimental valve techniques, the instruments may be transformed into acoustic noise generators. Half-valve and muting techniques allow for an acoustic filtering of the tone, opening up a wide colour spectrum. The instruments may be tuned microtonally and combined with new technology. For example, the attachment of sensors to the valves allows the instrumental mechanism to interact with current computer technology.

Most events will take place at Heimathafen, a historic ballroom in the heart of Neukölln, located directly at the U-Bahn station Karl-Marx-Straße. Heimathafen’s lush acoustic and warm atmosphere ¨C not to mention its beer garden and beloved adjoining Café Rix DC are unique within the district of Neukölln, making it perfectly suited as a meeting point for Berlin’s contemporary music scenes. Kontraklang grand opening with zeitkratzer.
