Kontraklang is a new monthly contemporary music concert series at Heimathafen Neukölln curated by Marta Blazanovic-Drefers, Andreas Engström and Christopher Williams and funded by the Berlin Cultural Affairs Department.
The series reflects the diversity of Berlin’s contemporary music scenes, and at the same time supports their common cutting edges. In this way the curators maintain a broad definition of the term “contemporary”: the focus is not just on conventionally notated chamber music, but also on exchange between neighbouring fields of sound art, composer-performer practices, media-based approaches and music theater. Through dynamic and eclectic programs that question boundaries of style, generations of musicians and gender, Kontraklang welcomes an equally diverse audience from locals to expert listeners and tourists.

Contemporary music from Berlin has become something of a stamp of quality thanks to its bustling, multifaceted and constantly evolving scene. Here size is matched by diversity ¨C speaking of just one scene would be a gross understatement. Berlin is home to a multitude of scenes entangled together and internationally networked, and their creative output feeds on as many influences as the various protagonists have homelands. The never-ending stream of musicians, artists and intellectuals who flock to Berlin for the promise of open event and project spaces continues to enrich the local scene in countless new dimensions.

Most events will take place at Heimathafen, a historic ballroom in the heart of Neukölln, located directly at the U-Bahn station Karl-Marx-Straße. Heimathafen’s lush acoustic and warm atmosphere ¨C not to mention its beer garden and beloved adjoining Café Rix DC are unique within the district of Neukölln, making it perfectly suited as a meeting point for Berlin’s contemporary music scenes. Kontraklang grand opening with zeitkratzer.
zeitkratzer is sound made visible, tangible, bodily – a truly unforgettable corporal experience of live music. The physicality of sound is celebrated through extended instrumental techniques, mutual understanding and amplification of traditional instruments. A midpoint between instrumental and electronic music turns out to be more bizarre and surprising than either of these.

It will make you expect more from music than you did before! zeitkratzer is a perverse subversion of musical genres. Keiji Haino meets Karlheinz Stockhausen meets Whitehouse meets Terre Thaemlitz meets Iannis Xenakis meets Lou Reed. The joy of the intensity of sound crosses all borders and brings these musics together into zeitkratzer’s plain of complex textures. A challenge to both composers and non-academic noise-makers thrown by the most talented performers, improvisers, sound artists and composers around.
