Julie Ann Campbell, A.K.A LoneLady was born in Ashton, Manchester. She grew up in Audenshaw and aged 16 taught herself to play on an acoustic guitar bought for £10 from Ashton market. Her new album HINTERLAND conjures impressions of decayed Manchester outskirts, childhood playspaces and reclusive inner landscapes.
Literally the country behind’, in German, Hinterland continues Campbell’s fascination with the post- industrial ruinscape. At its core beat simple drum machine grooves, spliced through with Campbell’s intricate, choppy and dynamic guitar playing.

With longer, exploratory songs full of inventive twists and turns, Hinterland expands the stark pallette of its predecessor, ‘Nerve Up’ into more colourful territories, with a funk and dance influence emerging. “Its channelling Parliament/ Funkadelic, Rufus, Arthur Russell, Cabaret Voltaire ..among others” Always underpinned, as Campbell puts it, by ‘ an inescapably North of England cement-coloured psyche.
Lonelady sounds like the economy, inventiveness and energy of British post punk while her new work incorporates dance and funk elements. Though guitar is at the core of her writing, electronic and industrial music, especially analogue instruments, are also a big influence, reflected in her love of synthetic percussion and drum machines.
