alif::split in the wall is an experimental concert which transposes the principles of visual arts exhibitions and performance art onto the musical form of the concert.
Installation, performance and music: the room installation by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota creates a pulsating organism through which the musician and audience can move freely. Within this space the composers Stefan Goldmann and Samir Odeh-Tamimi unfold a minefield of perceptions between techno, Arabic music and Western avantgarde, exhibition and concert. The Zafraan Ensemble musicians, Jeremias Schwarzer and the singer-performer Salome Kammer move back and forth between these extremes.
Chiharu Shiota is a Japanese installation artist who settled in Berlin in 1996. Originally a student of painting at Kyoto Seika University, she soon began to develop three-dimensional installation pieces. After a stay in Canberra/Australia, she came to Germany to continue her studies at the Berlin University of the Arts.
A primary subject of her work is memory as something that exists, but is neither tangible nor verifiable. To this end, she often works with used objects. She displays their stories in extensive installations, often by weaving miles of black woolen threads around them. Walking through her installations becomes a physical experience that evokes a new sense of space.
[vimeo 138307390 w=700&h=481]Zafraan Ensemble from Berlin is a young and multi-faceted group for contemporary music that has made a name for itself through innovative concert productions and its high musical quality. This is shown by the many prizes won in international competitions, and also by collaborations with some of the most important composers of our time.
The ensemble – made up of 10 musicians of diverse nationalities – was formed predominantly from graduates of the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, where it has repeatedly won the competition for contemporary music, and has worked on projects with conductors such as Manuel Nawri, Titus Engel, André de Ridder, Premil Petrovic and Adrian Pavlov. Since its formation in 2009, Zafraan Ensemble has performed internationally on numerous occasions, and in doing so, it has developed a wide and varied repertoire. Regular workshops with young composers and instrumentalists give the members of the ensemble the opportunity to pass on their vast knowledge of contemporary music and performance, most recently during the Beijing International Composition Workshop 2013 and at events of the Akademie Musiktheater Heute and in cooperation with the Institut Klangzeitort Berlin in the season 2014/15.
