Nika Schmitt – umwandler at Meinblau Projektraum / 8-16.7.2023

With an Artist Talk on Friday, 7.7.23 at 7pm at Meinblau singuhr – projekte opens the two-part sound installation project “umwandler” with the Luxembourgish artist Nika Schmitt.

In a one-week experimental exhibition Nika Schmitt develops her sound installation “umwandler” for the Large Water Reservoir on Belforter Straße (27.7.-13.8.23, Wed-Sun 14-20 h). Visitors can study test setups, sketches and objects, talk with the artist and follow the development of the piece before the sound installation opens in the Water Reservoir in late July.

Her kinetic sculptures and sound installations are marked by a special combination of sound, electronics and mechanics. Her pieces focus on complex physical processes in a surprisingly simple and intuitive way. The questions she explores are universal and her artistic realizations are often humorously paired with sometimes wondrous mechanical procedures.

Her new project „umwandler“ transforms the Large Water Reservoir on Belforter Straße into a sounding transformation center of energy. The artist installs a system that produces electrical power but at the same time stops the flow of energy, deforming its own power needs by charging and discharging itself. Nika Schmitt transforms the energetic processes generated by the system into continuously changing sounds and sound movements in the space.
