To promote the release of their new album Superheroes, Ghostvillains + Stuff, The Notwist set out on tour this November including a Berlin show at Lido in Kreuzberg. Support come from their Alien Transistor label mates Protein which makes this an awesome double bill not to be missed for fans of indietronica, post-rock and alternative pop.
While their early records moved through heavy metal into dark indie rock, their recent efforts for which they’ve received the most attention have been very strongly influenced by the electronica scene, along with the other groups on the record label Morr Music. The Notwist are Markus Acher / guitar, vocals; Michael Acher / bass; Andi Haberl / drums and Martin Gretschmann (aka Console) / programming.
The two Achers and Messerschmid formed the group in 1989 in Weilheim, near Augsburg. In 1990 they recorded their self-titled debut, a grunge-metal oriented LP. 1992 saw the release of Nook, which has an indie rock sound, while their 1995 album 12 contains their first flirtation with electronics.
Martin Gretschmann joined the group in 1997. Shrink, released in 1998, is a jazz-electro-rock album. In 1998 Cynthia Dall did the vocals for a remix of “Torture Day” by The Notwist. The album Neon Golden put them on the map for American listeners, with its heartfelt sentiment and catchy tunes. The group has been remixed by Four Tet, Caribou, Console, Loopspool, Panda Bear and others. Singer Markus Acher collaborated with anticon. rapper/producer Alias on the song “Unseen Sights,” an effort that shows a surprising musical breadth for both artists.
PROTEIN, registered in every day life as tax payer Tobias Laemmert, released his first official studio album “Süss” in 2001. Mathias Modica, the Gomma label boss, heard Protein’s tape by chance during a taxi ride and instantly offered him a contract. Protein’s new masterpiece is highly recommended to everybody who is into artists like Notwist or Console, but also for Aphex Twin or Tim Hecker followers. There will be limited run of 100 copies for quick listeners, each hand numbered by Nana Dix, which will also include the full length video on DVD.
