Minute/Year is an automated, multi-year, sound-based durational installation artwork. For the entirety of 2019 — beginning on January 1, and continuing until December 31 — it is installed in grüntaler9, the unique space for performative experiments in Wedding, Berlin, for its fourth annual iteration. And on Monday, May 20, 2019, there will be a special open minute event, at grüntaler9. During this event, attendees will be able to directly experience — and contribute to — the sounds and images that this ongoing automated work generates. This event will be the second in a series related to Minute/Year that will be occurring at grüntaler9 in 2019. If you’re interested, please come by at 7:30pm. Entrance is free. The minute occurs at 8:19pm sharp and goes on only for exactly 60 seconds, and before then we would like to give a small introduction to the work and what it means to experience it live. After the minute, we will invite visitors for a chat about the work. The recording that will occur during the open minute will also be available to listen to online directly afterwards, from around 8:25pm.
Minute/Year is a work by Kata Kovács and Tom O’Doherty, who have worked as a collaborative duo since 2011. This work often combines elements of durational and time-based art, minimalist and electroacoustic music and sound, movement, and video. The work often applies rigorous processes to simple but frequently-overlooked phenomena—they are interested in processes, sounds, and movements that come close to imperceptibility, and the ways in which this material can be transformed through layering, rhythm, pattern, and repetition.
