The annual Pictoplasma Festival showcases the latest trends in character design and art, and in its 13th edition embraces full immersion. This year’s focus is on artists and designers exploring the role of character design within the aesthetic conventions of gaming, virtual, and augmented reality, testing the ability of their figurative creations to push genre boundaries and challenge our grasp on the real.
The theme ’Character Upload’ reflects on an understanding of cultural production in the age of extreme viral circulation and ‘Internet Everywhere’—once released, the characters act as autonomous agents, move freely across media and link themselves to other artifacts beyond control.
In addition to short film programs and a conference at Babylon am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, the Character Walk taking visitors on a tour through exhibitions at 12 galleries, two opening parties in the row feature exciting art happenings and music performances.
The festival kicks off on Wednesday with a meet ’n’ greet at ACUD MACHT NEU, and a steady mix of dub and electronic beats by Deadbeat. On Thursday night the same venue hosts character-driven art happenings, a live concert by animation star Sophie Koko Gate’s music project ‘John Daker,’ and a mix of tropical bass music by Daniel Haaksman.
