SCHRUMPF! Fiddler / LOUDsoft & Ariel Efraim Ashbel & friends at HAU / Sunday, 17.12.2023

A shenanigan can be a prank, a joke, or a game – unexpected, funny, and at least a bit zany. Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends have been bringing shenanigans to the stage for ten years and in their new production, they are taking on the traditional musical.

In “SCHRUMPF! Fiddler”, children and adults watch can watch the ensemble’s visually stunning shenanigans on the big HAU stage, sing and dance together, and talk to the numerous artists involved about their work, its many inspirations, and its meaning. And at the end we’ll have a grand finale – jazz hands!

The series SCHRUMPF! opens up the work of Berlin artists for an intergenerational audience, presenting family versions of current pieces by seven Berlin ensembles. By shortening the pieces and providing moments of interaction between artists and audience, the series creates an entry for families into artistic worlds that would otherwise be reserved for adults. The audience is invited to move, touch, ask questions and give their curiosity free rein as they explore each artistic offering. Each piece presented is representative of the specific aesthetic world of the artists involved, the series taken as a whole gives access to a wide swath of Berlin’s cultural landscape.

Ariel Efraim Ashbel (*1982, Tel Aviv) is a Berlin based performance maker. He makes aesthetic spectacles weaving together a wide array of historical, political, theoretical, and pop-cultural references. Through composing and sampling, he collaborates with his transdisciplinary, international team of friends to make compositions at the intersection of theater, visual art, dance, music, and installation.

For children 6 and up and adults of any age.
