Sleep Technique by Dewey Dell at Tanzfabrik / Saturday-Sunday 25.-26.02.2017

A response to Chauvet Pont d’Arc cave in Ardèche, France. The perception of what is left behind from the earliest life is filtered through eyes that are very distant from ancient ways of living and understanding. Nevertheless we feel the sensitivity of the ancestors intimately close to us, as if their myths and primitive rites could still be obscurely present. We feel shaken – in our deepest selves – by a common echo that reaches us from another time and life. Although the original meanings have disappeared and only the memory of a few elements remains, the traces that persist go far beyond the need of a meaning.

When we enter a cave and we look at prehistoric paintings, an even wider and deeper connection ignites. We truly feel that the past is looking at us in the same way in which we are staring into it. Their art, hidden in the mountain’s heart, seems to call for an answer from across a deep temporal abyss.
This show is an attempt of a dialogue, an impossible response to the infinite wealth of what the first homo sapiens sapiens left inside Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave, home to rock paintings 36,000 years old. Through the darkness of the theater we cross the chambers of this cave, believing to approach them.
