The music and performance project Sound Of Difference, developed by composer Maya Dunietz and Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, works with multiple acoustic drones differing in microtonal range.
These sounds create tonal friction and subtle pulsating rhythms that are constantly moving and changing. Seemingly static drones never make the same sound for a given second, but rather move towards or away from each other in an endless search for balance. It’s a game of closeness and distance, attraction and repulsion. In order to resolve a sound imbalance, the musicians position themselves at different points in the room, thereby allowing the sounds to saturate the atmosphere.
Sound Of Difference explores a special sonic dimension. The audience is invited to approach the performers, follow their movements, and hear the vibrations of the sounds with their whole body. The second half of the performance, entitled “Fruit Sorbet,” consists of an open structure and improvisational parts reflecting the unique styles of each musician. This project is in collaboration with WhatWhy Art from Seoul, a contemporary music ensemble that plays traditional Korean instruments.
Founded in 2006 in Berlin, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop has since its inception dedicated itself to the development of new forms of experimental music theater. With great openness, the ensemble creates new formats in collaboration with international artists from other genres and stages music in current contexts. In recent years, the focus of the ensemble’s work has shifted to an examination of the body. The members of the ensemble have developed from pure instrumentalists to musical performers and co-authors of these collaborative productions.
Together Dunietz, Kaleidoskop and WhatWhy Art create a complex, ambivalent environment of slow gestures and changing pitches. The performers become a multi-headed organism, a swarm that moves without a leader or a score.
