Another awesome lineup at Acud Macht Neu this December with funky jazzy English duo Spaceheads taking us on another tripped out journey into the unknown as well as Berlin resident F.S.Blumm presenting a release performance for his new dub influenced album on Pingipung as F.S. Blummbastic. Pingipung labelmates Herler will also perform a record release concert for their new 7″ single.
Spaceheads are a duo of trumpet and drums, based in Manchester and London. They formed in the early 1990s and have released ten albums to date as well as toured extensively around Europe and the USA. Andy Diagram plays trumpet through electronics mainly live loopers and harmonizers. Richard Harrison plays drums and percussion.
As well as playing as a duo Spaceheads sometimes add musicians to their line up. They have two expanded line ups that they also record and tour with Spaceheads trio. This is a trio with Double Bass player Vincent Bertholet. In the past few years Spaceheads trio have played in France and the UK as well as making a series of recordings, two of which appear on the bip hop generation (volume 9) compilation. They are currently completing an EP due in 2016.
F.S. Blumm aka Frank Schültge from Berlin has been making marvelous music for many years now. Most famously solo like on his latest album (Pingipung 039 in 2013), as part of the subtle folk-duo “Bobby & Blumm” or as a soundscape researcher at the side of Nils Frahm. With the snares rolling and all strings tuned down, the introverted guitarist transforms into the Dub master F.S. Blummbastic. The combination of Dub and Blumm is not new: He is part of the Quasi Dub Development (QDD). The collective around Blumm and Luca Fadda from New York recently released the album “Little-Twister vs Stiff-Neck” with features by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry or Lady Ann on Pingipung in 2014.
These “Riddims and Biscuits” came to life during the creation of material for future QDD-concerts. F.S. Blummbastic played all instruments himself: rhythm guitar, organ and of course bass. Soon it was clear: These riddims are already most intriguing in their reduced form. They like to stand alone and get played back loudly. For the drums, F.S. Blummbastic brought Helmut Erler aka ‘hey’ from Hey-Ø-Hansen into the QDD cosmos. Not only did he bang the drums, but he has also mixed, mastered and cut the fine vinyl single of this album.
This dystopia for Hamburg’s club culture is a dooming reality, since the Golden Pudel Club is threatened with a forced sale this winter. Herler, one half of Hey-Ø-Hansen, spontaneously rhymed an ode to this gem of our city in his recent gig there.
