Sam Rouanet (Drums), Giovanni Verga (Keyboards & FX) and Takeshi Nishimoto (Guitars) – aka SPLEEN – are all part of Berlin’s Electronic and Improv music scenes. As an eclectic group of musicians, SPLEEN develops various elements from underground club music within an improvised soundscape to capture an endless groove.
In addition to producing music under his alias Reynold, Sam Rouanet runs Trenton records. Giovanni composes music and produces Disco-house re-edits under the name Rotary Disco 76. Takeshi, besides pursuing his own solo career, is also collaborating with the well-established American producer John Tejada for the duo band project “I’m not a gun”.
[vimeo 72801400 w=620&h=300]As eclectic musicians, the SPLEEN members work with various elements from underground club music to improvised sound-scapes. SPLEEN is the perfect way to make everything ONE and the tunes always seem to contain essential ingredients: endless groove, experimental sounds and freedom of arrangement.
On their 2013 release “Fusionary Part 1” on the Back To The Balearics label, Spleen manage to steer clear from the much-ridiculed ‘balearic template’ (five minute beatless intro, cosmic pads, soft drums, noodly guitar, presto), capturing what sounds like impromptu jamsessions of a bunch of musicians with a love for rhythm, jazz and dub.
Part one in their musical odyssey ‘Fusionary’ consists of live jams and instrumentation over computer-based syncopation. Their music has a strange yet organic flow to it, which is both hypnotic and rhythmic. Think Kraut influenced, psychedelic dub funk with a touch of alt pop and you’ll be on the right road, but still miles away.
