D/B Recommended: Steve Gunn @ Monarch Berlin | Wednesday, 17.10.2012

Nowadays, there are so many great solo guitar players mining a vein started by John Fahey and extended by everyone from Loren Connors to Jim O’Rourke.

There are so many, in fact, that standing out is almost impossible. Yet Steve Gunn has somehow managed that trick.

That’s not strictly due to his ability as a player—though he is eminently skilled—but more to his knack for discovering varied styles and settings in which to couch that string-stretching talent.

While Steve is still a groundbreaking guitar player, he has in recent years turned to the more compositional/song side of music and has started working on proper songs, to which he adds his soothing and yet powerful voice.

Steve has a new album to come out soon, partially backed by the Black Twig Pickers (who colaborated with Jack Rose in 2009).

Also this year he released the duo with drummer John Truscinski “Ocean Parkway” on Three Lobed Recordings (Bardo Pond, Six Organs of Admittance, Jack Rose, etc), where he has previously recorded in 2009 his most acclaimed/accomplished record to date “Boerum Place”.
