From tentative beginnings in 2001, Trondheim Voices has grown to become one of Europe’s pre-eminent improvising vocal groups. A current membership of up to ten female singers collaborates with a sound engineer, Asle Karstad, to create performances that make the best use of each particular environment.
A small wireless box is carried by each singer, allowing them to move around while shaping the sound of their individual voices, using effects and loops to enhance their extended vocal techniques, before Karstad creates a live mix from the results. In recent years they have presented compositions by Marilyn Mazur, Mats Gustafsson, Christian Wallumrød and Jon Balke.
They will be joined by Kit Downes, the English pianist, who can be heard in many different settings, including the bands Troyka, the Golden Age of Steam, Vyamanikal and ENEMY. His first album of solo organ improvisations, titled “Obsidian”, will be released early next year.
