“…und weiße Lakritze aus Lammfell” at St. Elisabeth / 7-9.7.2023

With “…und weiße Lakritze aus Lammfell” (… white licorice from lambskin) director Ulrike Ruf created a musical theater that deals with childhood as a stage of life on many different levels. Adults project purity and innocence onto children; the media uses them to advertise happiness and natural beauty. The reality of a child’s life, however, is often quite different…

Based on a cycle of poems by Berlin poet Ulrike Almut Sandig, with music based on compositions and sounds by Iris ter Schiphorst, played and sung by the Berlin Girls’ Choir, the piece reflects on questions of independence and heteronomy in childhood.

The scenes are deliberately dreamlike, vague and determined by an uncontrollable urge to play, inspired by counting-off rhymes and clapping games as heard in schoolyards and playgrounds. At the same time, the underlying reality of a diffuse experience of violence remains palpably present in the play.
